Chapter 2 Ethernet Infrastructure Components
Media
The actual wire used for the network is referred to as the physical media.
Generally, shorter cable runs are less susceptible to EMI (electromagnetic
interference) and RFI (radio-frequency interference) from electrical circuits,
motors, and other machinery.

For more information about the media options, see the Ethernet section of the
Network Media Catalog, publication M116-CA552

Do you have any of these:
Long distances?
High Magnetic fields?
High noise?
Fiber Media
Recommendations:
Multi-mode for general purposes, cost less
Single-node yields higher distance, but
costs more
Do you have excess
amounts of any of these:
Radiated noise?
Conducted noise?
Metal conduit?
Copper STP (shielded twisted pair)
Recommendations:
Requires proper grounding
Category 5e, 6, and 6a cables and
connectors
Copper UTP (unshielded twisted pair)
Recommendations:
Requires proper grounding
Category 5e, 6, and 6a cables and comectors
